Reform the Rockefeller Drug Laws!

The Rockefeller Drugs Laws are ineffective, racist, wasteful and unjust. With enough pressure on the Governor and the Legislature, we can make significant reforms of these laws this year through the budget process.

Real reform must include four key components:

Reducing sentences for drug offenses
Restoring judicial discretion and ending mandatory minimums for drug offenses
Expanding and funding community-based drug treatment programs
Delivering retroactive sentencing relief to currently incarcerated Rockefeller prisoners serving unjustly long sentences

I am writing to urge you to enact meaningful, real reform of the Rockefeller Drug Laws by supporting legislation passed by the Assembly, A.6085/S.2855.  For over 35 years, the citizens of New York State have suffered the ineffective, wasteful and unjust Rockefeller Drug Laws. The Assembly's legislation marks an important shift in New York's drug policies, away from the Rockefeller Drug Laws and towards a public health and safety approach. The time for this change is now.

In such dire economic times, New Yorkers simply cannot afford these failed laws. Incarceration costs are extremely high, while treatment and alternatives to incarceration cost much less and are far more effective at reducing recidivism and restoring community health.

The Assembly's bill represents real reform and is the first step towards advancing a public health and safety approach to drug policy. Now you have the opportunity to continue this important reform that New Yorkers have been waiting for. Please support real reform of the Rockefeller Drug Laws by supporting A.6085/S.2855.
