Last week, the Republicans attempted a coup d’etat in the State Senate. This action, engineered in part by Florida resident and billionaire Tom Golisano, who recently left New York to avoid paying his fair share in taxes, is being framed as reform.

But this isn't real reform. The real impact of yesterday’s event is that our voices will be silenced. Legislation that would make housing and health insurance more affordable, protect our environment, create marriage equality, and fix New York’s broken “pay-to-play” campaign finance system will likely no longer be viable in the Senate under Republican control.
